A fascinating exploration of the science of the impossiblefrom death rays and force fields to invisibility cloaksrevealing to what extent such technologies might be achievable decades or millennia into the future.
One hundred years ago, scientists would have said that lasers, televisions, and the atomic bomb were beyond the realm of physical possibility. In Physics of the Impossible, the renowned physicist Michio Kaku explores to what extent the technologies and devices of science fiction that are deemed equally impossible today might well become commonplace in the future. From teleportation to telekinesis, Kaku uses the world of science fiction to explore the fundamentalsâÂÂand the limitsâÂÂof the laws of physics as we know them today. He ranks the impossible technologies by categoriesâÂÂClass I, II, and III, depending on when they might be achieved, within the next century, millennia, or perhaps never. In a compelling and thought-provoking narrative, he explains: Ã· How the science of optics and electromagnetism may one day enable us to bend light around an object, like a stream flowing around a boulder, making the object invisible to observers âÂÂdownstreamâÂÂ Ã· How ramjet rockets, laser sails, antimatter engines, and nanorockets may one day take us to the nearby stars Ã· How telepathy and psychokinesis, once considered pseudoscience, may one day be possible using advances in MRI, computers, superconductivity, and nanotechnology Ã· Why a time machine is apparently consistent with the known laws of quantum physics, although it would take an unbelievably advanced civilization to actually build one Kaku uses his discussion of each technology as a jumping-off point to explain the science behind it. An extraordinary scientific adventure, Physics of the Impossible takes readers on an unforgettable, mesmerizing journey into the world of science that both enlightens and entertains.A 20-Year Race Through Time… In the near future, one man holds the key to our past. Chester Fuze lived a solitary life until he flung himself twenty years back in time. For years, he had loved movie star Rhonda Romero through television screens, movie theaters, and magazine covers. It wasn’t until she had fallen so far as to sell her face for a cosmetic transplant that he knew he had to travel back and save her before her life headed down such a tragic and destructive path. Lunging backward through two decades in a flash, Chester races across country and enters the world of seedy gambling and the bizarre jungle of behind-the-scenes Hollywood, while being hunted down by a deranged bookie, an escaped convict, and even his past self, all of whom are determined to kill him. He had put aside the secret to time travel, daring not risk the world to test his theory. It had placed him in a straight jacket for several years of his life. It had estranged his own mother from him. He had let it go for his own sanity. Now, he’ll pick it back up to save Rhonda. God help us all. Great Gift, 2010-08-29 By Angie S () This book was purchased as a gift for a person who is an avid reader and enjoys reading about adventures of people in the different parts of the United States. She was so pleased and is eager to share what she has read with me. TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY, 2010-08-20 By S. tibbs (los angeles, ca) The book arrived in sterling shape with dust jacket attached and in excellent shape. the purveyor was prompt and the item arrived in good time. The content of the book is one of Steinbecks best late works in trying to recapture the flavor of the various sections of the United States during the 60,s. I was in my prime during the 60,s and can truly relate to the various characterizations of the sections of the country at that time.excellent read and the usage of his standard poodle as traveling companion was very amusing.a great book i reccommend to all animal lovers. Still Revealing Truths Decades Later, 2010-08-16 By Sean Poppe (Seattle, WA) Steinbeck’s travels across the country with Charley the dog reveal a lot about human nature, self-discovery, attitudes and opinions of the “everyman”, and so much more. Each chapter is a super focused slice that tells the truth and lies at the same time, while both romanticizing and bringing to solid-ground America and Americans. An absolute must read for Americans of all walks. A simple pleasure, 2010-08-14 By Rebecca () This is one of my favorite books. The images he elicits are so vivid and colorful. It’s an easy read but not shallow in the least…a simple and enchanting journey. Very entertaining., 2010-04-10 By Frank P. Matrone (Kutztown) I don’t read a lot of novels and I am not a literary critic by any stretch. However I really enjoyed reading Travels with Charley. It is full of insights and kept me interested and laughing. |
